On 4 July 1954 in Bern's Wankdorf Stadium, West Germany won the World Cup final 3–2 against Hungary, unbeaten for four years and winners 8–3 over Germany in the group stage. Helmut Rahn scored in the 84th minute. Millions listened to Herbert Zimmermann's radio commentary. Nine years after the war, the match became a symbol of recovery.
