History & CultureHow it works

How to land a plane every three minutes.

At first there was chaos: on 13 August 1948 aircraft stacked up over Tempelhof. General William Tunner then imposed fixed rules: every plane flies the same altitude, speed and spacing. Anyone who misses the landing does not try again but flies back with the cargo. Pilots stayed in the cockpit, food came to them. Result: landings every three minutes, around the clock.

Useful: A rigid rhythm without exceptions almost always beats flexible one-off decisions under load.
