The first circumnavigation: 5 ships out, 1 back.
In September 1519, five ships with about 270 men under Ferdinand Magellan left Spain. Magellan himself was killed in April 1521 in a battle on the Philippine island of Mactan. In September 1522, only the 'Victoria' under Juan Sebastián Elcano reached Spain again, with 18 survivors aboard. Its cargo of cloves still covered the whole expedition's cost.
