Europe's first printed book: 180 copies, 49 survive.

Around 1454/55 in Mainz, Johannes Gutenberg printed his 42-line Bible, the first major book in Europe made with movable metal type. The print run was about 180 copies, roughly three quarters on paper and the rest on vellum. Today 49 still exist, many of them incomplete. Before that, a handwritten Bible had cost a scribe years of work.

Useful: When the cost of copying collapses, who owns knowledge changes within a single generation.
