Hair cells in the ear don't grow back. Ever.
Around 16,000 hair cells per ear turn sound into nerve signals. Once noise destroys them, the loss is permanent. The accepted limit is 85 dB over eight hours – street traffic. Every extra 3 dB halves the safe time: at 100 dB (a concert) it's only 15 minutes. The WHO estimates 1 billion young people are at risk.
Useful: Earplugs at a concert cost a euro – a hearing aid costs thousands.
