Body & HealthFact
You taste strawberry mostly with your nose.
Your tongue detects only five basic qualities: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami. Everything finer, whether strawberry, coffee or cinnamon, comes from smell: as you chew, aroma molecules rise up the back of the throat into the nose, called retronasal olfaction. Pinch your nose and a sweet is just sweet. That is why food tastes flat with a cold.
Useful: Exhaling deliberately while eating intensifies flavour because more aroma reaches the smell receptors.
